Surendra Jain, the joint general secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), has been a key figure in spreading hate and division by attacking Muslims and pushing the extremist Hindutva ideology.
On 14th November 2022, during a public speech, Jain falsely stated that the Qutub Minar, a historical landmark in Delhi, was originally a Hindu temple and should be “liberated” from its current form as a mosque. His words were aimed at inciting religious sentiments, and he further called for the removal of the mosque, suggesting it was a symbol of historical oppression.
In 2023, Jain continued his campaign of hatred by making false and harmful accusations against Muslims. In one such instance, he accused Muslims of deliberately contaminating food and said that they were engaging in “love jihad” and “land jihad.” At a VHP event in December 2024, Jain went further, calling for economic boycotts of Muslim vendors and businesses. He stoked fears by claiming that Muslims were intentionally spreading viruses. Jain also used this platform to spew anti-Muslim hate, framing Muslims as a threat to Hindu identity and safety in India.
In 2024, Jain made statements about Muslims being “infiltrators” who had no place in India. At a rally in September of that year, he accused the Indian government of being complicit in allowing “foreign invaders” to destabilize the country. He specifically targeted Muslim migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, calling them “infiltrators” and spreading fear about their alleged involvement in undermining India’s social and political fabric. Jain claimed that these migrants were being brought into the country to “change the demographic landscape” of India, positioning them as a threat to national security.
In September 2024, Jain launched a campaign accusing the government of using Hindu temples for political gain. He argued that this interference reflected a colonial mindset, similar to the actions of “Muslim invaders” and the British during colonial rule. Jain claimed that the state had been taking advantage of Hindu temples for years.
On October 27, 2024, during an event in Haflong, Assam, Jain made accusations against local churches, alleging that they were involved in the drug trade and contributing to the destruction of local culture and beliefs. Jain claimed, “On one hand, the Church is destroying our culture, insulting the traditions and beliefs here, and also destroying the life of the people here. Conversion is a challenge. We do answer it, but we will also tell the Church that if you disturb the law and order here, hurt the beliefs here, or engage in drug trade, this will not be accepted, and society will take it as a challenge.”
On November 10, 2024, at a Trishul Deeksha event in Deeg, Rajasthan, Jain falsely accused Muslims of conspiring to change the demographic makeup of India and posed them as a threat to Hinduism. During the same event, Jain also made baseless accusations against Christian churches in the North East, claiming that they were involved in supplying intoxicants to the youth in the region.
On November 13, 2024, Jain accused Muslims of perpetuating “jihadi aggression” and warned of rising religious tensions in India. The VHP released a report detailing over 300 incidents since January 2023, which they claim demonstrate attacks on Hindus by “jihadi elements.” Jain argued that these attacks were part of a larger plan to incite religious division, with political parties allegedly turning a blind eye.
He also warned that today’s Hindu community, unlike in the past, is unified and ready to respond to provocations within constitutional limits. Jain compared the situation to the “Direct Action Day” massacre of 1946 and claimed that Muslims who threaten violence against Hindus should not expect to play the victim. He further expanded the issue beyond India, citing attacks on Hindus globally, including in Kashmir and Bangladesh, and called for a united effort to defeat what he described as the “jihadi mindset.”
