Saurabh Sharma is the District President of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM), a Hindutva organization, from Agra, Uttar Pradesh (UP). He is known for his anti-Muslim activism and for filing controversial legal petitions against Muslim mosques and monuments.
In December 2022, Sharma was arrested as he was planning to recite the “Hanuman Chalisa,” a Hindu prayer, at the Shahi Masjid Idgah in Mathura, UP. The mosque is a communally sensitive site as Hindutva groups have filed a legal petition seeking to bar Muslims from praying there, claiming it is the birthplace of the Hindu deity Krishna. The ABHM had called upon residents to recite the prayer at the mosque to mark the 30th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
In January 2023, Sharma announced a reward of $575 to anyone who would “cut off” the tongue of Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Swami Prasad Maurya after the latter stated that certain verses of the Ramcharitmanas, an epic poem about Hindu deity Ram, promoted social discrimination.
“Any courageous person, if they cut off the tongue of SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya, would be rewarded with Rs 51,000 ($575) cheque. He has insulted our religious text and hurt the sentiments of Hindus,” Sharma stated.
In February 2024, Sharma and other ABHM activists staged a protest against the three day “Úrs” to commemorate the death of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan at the Taj Mahal. The protestors recited the “Shiv Chalisa,” a Hindu prayer, and offered holy water from the Yamuna river as they falsely believe the Taj Mahal is built on top of a Hindu temple “Tejo Mahalaya.”
Sharma also claimed that no religious programs could be held inside Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) monuments, making the commemoration of the “Urs” illegal. However, Syed Ibrahim Zaidi, organizing committee chairman, said that the “Urs” had been held at the Taj Mahal for centuries with the ASI giving permission for it every year.
Sharma also said that the ABHM intends to petition for a survey of the Taj Mahal premises on the lines of the one ordered at the Kashi Vishwanath and Krishna Janmabhoomi. Sharma was also one of the ABHM legal petitioners seeking to prohibit the observation of the “Urs” at the Taj Mahal and challenging free entry during the three-day event.
In February 2025, Sharma was part of an ABHM protest against Valentine’s Day celebrations in Agra, UP, where they burned an effigy to symbolize their disapproval, calling it a “Western imposition.”
“Valentine’s Day is a celebration borrowed from the Western cultures and has no place in our civilization. On this day, parks turn into centers of indecency. We will not tolerate such activities and will teach a lesson to those indulging in this behavior,” Sharma threatened.
