Pravin Darekar is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is known for propagating conspiracy theories about Muslims and for publicly supporting Hindutva demands such as anti-conversion laws and economic boycott of Muslims.
In February 2020, Darekar insisted that the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which grants expedited citizenship to six religious minorities from India’s neighboring countries, except Muslims, was not against any community and would not strip anyone of citizenship, while addressing a pro-CAA rally organized by the BJP in Palghar, Maharashtra. He also said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise had to be done every ten years as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, adding that some “anti-national” people are trying to “sabotage” it through “false propaganda.”
In the same month, Darekar demanded that Muslim activist Sharjeel Usmani must be booked under sedition charges for a speech he gave at the Elgar Parishad in Pune in January. Usmani had said that “The Hindu community has badly degenerated in today’s India.”
In September 2021, a police complaint was filed against Darekar for his remarks against the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), where he stated, “The NCP is the party that would kiss painted cheeks.” He was booked for using a word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
In January 2023, Darekar attended an event organized by the Sakal Hindu Samaj, an umbrella body of Hindutva organizations, in Mumbai where calls were made for the economic boycott of Muslim-owned businesses as well as laws against religious conversions and alleged “Love Jihad,” a conspiracy theory propagated by Hindutva groups that Muslim men seduce Hindu women in order to convert them to Islam.
In August 2023, Darekar and Prasad Lad, another BJP member, demanded a law against “Love Jihad” in Maharashtra along the lines of the one in place in Uttar Pradesh (UP), praising Yogi Adityanath, a hardline Hindu monk and Chief Minister of UP. Darekar claimed that Hindu girls were cheated through the use of fake names and then forced to convert, following which they were assaulted and deserted.
In March 2025, Darekar moved a breach of privilege notice in the Maharashtra legislative council against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra over the latter’s parody song targeting the state’s deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, claiming that Kamra had disrespected the dignity of legislative institutions through his remarks.
On his social media, Darekar regularly posts content relating to his political activities and the events he attends. He has also shown support for Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the ideologue behind Hindutva, by posting an image that says “I am Savarkar” in Marathi.
