Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, BJP MLA from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has repeatedly made statements reinforcing the Hindutva vision of India as a Hindu-only nation. His remarks have drawn criticism for their direct targeting of religious minorities, urging them to conform to Hindu customs or leave the country.

In February 2022, while campaigning for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Singh was caught on video addressing voters with a call for religious minorities to either assimilate or exit.

“If you have to live in Hindustan, you have to say ‘Radhe Radhe’,” he declared, adding, “If the Hindus are awakened, we will pull out the beards and make a chotia.” He directly referenced the partition of India, stating that those “unwilling to comply” should leave for Pakistan.

Following the circulation of the video, the Election Commission of India (ECI) barred Singh from campaigning for 24 hours, citing a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Singh later attempted to justify his remarks, claiming they were in reference to the Ahmedabad blast case rather than any religious community.

Two years later, in December 2024, Singh repeated the same message at a religious gathering in Amethi, once again declaring, “If you want to live in India, you will have to chant ‘Radhe Radhe’.” A video of the speech went viral, sparking controversy and opposition criticism that the BJP was inciting communal hatred.

The remarks followed a familiar pattern of political leaders making statements that reinforce the Hindutva demand for religious minorities to demonstrate loyalty through Hindu customs.
