K. Annamalai is the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu (TN). He is known for regularly targeting Christians and making provocative hate speeches against minorities.
In January 2022, Annamalai launched a communal campaign, following the tragic suicide of a 17-year-old girl in Thanjavur, (TN), alleging that she took the extreme step due to pressure from her school administration to convert to Christianity. However, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation concluded that the student’s death was caused by harassment from her hostel warden, not pressure to convert. A local Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader also exploited the child on her deathbed and influenced her parents in order to further a Hindutva narrative.
In October 2022, Annamalai gave a controversial interview to the Pesu Thamizha Pesu YouTube channel, claiming that an internationally-funded Christian Missionary NGO was allegedly involved in destroying Hindu culture by filing cases in the Supreme Court to prevent Hindus from bursting fireworks. A petition was filed against him for promoting enmity between different groups and statements conducing to public mischief.
In July 2025, a criminal case was registered against Annamalai and several senior BJP leaders for making provocative and communal remarks and violating Madras High Court conditions during a Hindutva event. The event was organized to demand sole Hindu control over Thirupparankundram Hill, controversially branded as the “Ayodhya of the South,” which also houses a centuries-old Sufi shrine and mosque. Annamalai made a veiled attack on the secular ideals promoted by the ruling party of TN implying the need for a religious revival and glorifying violence.
Annamalai regularly attacks the ruling party for their lack of support for Hindutva ideology and targets specific politicians in his social media posts.
