Arjun Ram Meghwal is the Union Law Minister and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP). He has stirred controversy on multiple occasions with his anti-Muslim comments and mixture of politics with religious events. From attending meetings for retired judges organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to supporting the Waqf Amendment Bill, he has repeatedly displayed an insensitivity to violence against minorities.

In September 2024, he posted about a meeting of 30 retired judges organized by the VHP on social media. The Hindutva group’s president, Alok Kumar, emphasized that this was a mistake as it was a private gathering focused on discussing issues related to the betterment of India “such as the Waqf Amendment Bill, handing back of temples, handing over of temples under government control, conversions etc.” Attendees discussing legal pathways to claim historic mosques as temples, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, and the criminalization of conversion to Islam and Christianity is extremely problematic because the judiciary has played a key role in advancing Hindutva claims in India.

In July 2018 he also stated that the lynching of a Muslim man in Rajasthan was due to Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s growing popularity. After a 28-year-old man was beaten to death on suspicion of cow smuggling, Meghwal stated that though it was condemnable, the 1984 Sikh riots remain the biggest example of mob lynching in India’s history and that mob lynching incidents against Muslims were happening to defame the BJP government amid rising popularity of Modi.

In April 2025, Meghwal also defended the Waqf Amendment Act, stating that it was passed in accordance with the Constitution and that Parliament has the right to pass such legislation. He warned the public against concerns raised by Opposition leaders regarding the bill, stating the people should be cautious of those spreading misleading information and that the leaders of the BJP would take responsibility for explaining the bill to the public.

In response to the criticism of All India Muslim Personal Law Board President Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, who stated that the country should run according to the Constitution and not based on a party manifesto, Meghwal clarified that all the actions were taken as per the constitution and not related to religious matters.

His social media is full of praises for Modi and the various programs that have been implemented by the BJP. He routinely goes after Robert Vadra and has also proposed an anti-homosexuality bill despite the Supreme Court’s historic judgment that decriminalized Article 377 of the Constitution on same-sex relationships.
