Anima Sonkar, currently the National Social Media Head of the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha and an Assistant Professor at Delhi University, has consistently used her platform to amplify anti-Muslim misinformation and hardline Hindutva views. Based in Ghaziabad, Sonkar has long been affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and has openly supported its aggressive tactics.
In 2020, she shared a misleading video on social media in which a Muslim bride is affectionately kissed on the cheek by a man. Without any verification, Sonkar, then the Delhi State Joint Secretary of ABVP, implied the gesture was inappropriate and representative of moral decay within Muslim society. She invoked actor Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate to accuse it of ignoring “social evils” in Islam. Around the same time, she also shared a photo of a grievously injured toddler, falsely claiming the child had been harmed during Muslim-led protests in West Bengal against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. The image, however, had circulated online for years and had no connection to the protests.
Sonkar’s hardline stance has extended beyond social media. During the violent attack on students and faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru University in January 2020, which was widely attributed to masked ABVP members, Sonkar defended the use of violence.
Speaking to Times Now, she admitted that ABVP activists had been instructed to arm themselves with rods, pepper spray, and even acid for “self-defence,” revealing the mindset with which the assault was orchestrated.
