Laxmi Dubey is a Hindi singer and performer from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. She is known for her “Hindutva pop” music which is Islamophobic and violent, furthering a supremacist Hindutva agenda.
Although Dubey recalled singing songs about Hindu and Muslim brotherhood and fraternity as a child and being less aggressive then, she claimed to be angry at what was happening now. Anger and aggression are now the hallmark of her music with her saffron-hued music videos and lyrics that urge her audience to engage in violence. She has gained popularity among Hindutva groups for this, often getting invited to sing at events organized by BJP members in their cities.
“I am proud of what I am doing,” Dubey said in an interview to TIME in December 2022, adding “I have never sung anything against any religion. I have always promoted my religion, though.”
Her songs, like “Har Ghar Bhagwa Chayega” (Every House Shall Turn Saffron), explicitly call for Hindu rule in India, with lyrics that translate to “In front of Hindu lions, the enemy will crumble … India would be of Hindus, only saffron would fly high,” and “Khoon se tilak karo, goliyo se aarti” (Mark your forehead with blood and worship with bullets). Another song has the lyrics “Agar Hindustan mein rehna hoga, To vande mataram kehna hoga” (If you want to stay in India, praise the motherland).
In a June 2022 interview to Al Jazeera, Dubey proudly claimed her songs “spread awareness” among Hindus and wanted to “…bring Hindus together to create an army.” She alleged that she “does not have anything against the Muslim community,” only against those “who are enemies of the country and support Pakistan,” yet her lyrics have provoked violence against Muslims.
Dubey supports and propagates several problematic and derogatory conspiracy theories peddled by right-wing groups and leaders such as Indian Muslims being anti-nationals and supporting Pakistan and terrorism, “love jihad” where Muslim men allegedly seduce Hindu women in order to convert them to Islam and that Muslims engage in polygamy to increase their population in proportion to Hindus.
Dubey also praised Modi, thanking him for everything he was doing for Hindus as well as for abrogating the semi-autonomous status of Indian-administered Kashmir in 2019, believing that “We had almost lost Kashmir, it’s because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that we still have it.” According to her, the Partition was not done properly. “When the partition was done on the basis of religion by then stakeholders, Pakistan should have been given to one religion and India to another religion. Then this fight could have been avoided.”
Dubey’s social media posts promote her music but also include footage of the demolition of the Barbi Masjid in 1992 and calls for a Hindu nation, as well as praise for Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
