Gopal Chahar is a state convener of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Chahar regularly makes unverified claims that Muslim monuments and places of worship are originally Hindu temples. He is also vocal about establishing India as a “Hindu Rashtra” (Hindu nation).

In August 2024, Chahar attempted to perform “aarti” (venerations) on the stairs of the historic Jama Masjid in Agra during a Hindu festival, which sparked communal tension. Hindu groups claim that a Hindu idol was buried under the mosque’s stairs by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Chahar was detained by police.

In September 2024, staged a protest after a video emerged of two tourists urinating inside the Taj Mahal, bringing holy water and cow dung to cleanse the site. Chahar claimed that the Taj Mahal is an ancient Shiv temple, “Tejo Mahalaya,” and that the urination had made the place impure, but was stopped by security. 

Chahar regularly posts anti-Muslim propaganda on his social media, including vilifying Mughals, supports violence against minorities and also promotes establishing India as a Hindu nation.
