Kompella Madhavi Latha is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member from Hyderabad, Telangana. She regularly appears on small-time YouTube channels, making extremely misogynistic, casteist and Islamophobic comments that go unchecked.
In a 2023 interview, she stated that Hindu women had always dressed in a “sexy” way before and that gender inequality began only due to “invasions” by the Mughals, Persians, French, and British.
“They really used to dress that sensually and men never had any bad intentions towards them. Islam needs women to cover up their entire body because they didn’t believe their men had self-control, because of their food habits. We [Hindus] don’t eat beef, do we? Even the non-vegetarian food we eat is sattvic,” she said.
Although Latha has regularly been publicly anti-Muslim, she repeatedly claims to have done a lot of charity work among poor Pasmanda (oppressed caste) Muslim women and children and campaigned in support of the ban on triple talaq (instant divorce), a practice in some Muslim communities.
In a March 2024 interview, Latha claimed that “love jihad,” a conspiracy theory propagated by right-wing groups, is prevalent in Hyderabad and that the concept of “love marriage” does not exist in Islam, with Muslim men treating their non-Muslim wives like a “slave.”
In April 2024, Latha also criticized Asaduddin Owaisi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, asking if his “plan was to establish ‘Osmanistan’” adding “He is turning out to be worse than Jinnah.” when he questioned the politics of Ayodhya Ram Temple and that his party would prevent beef bans. She also claimed that Hindus in his constituency were “unsafe” because of him, calling him a Razakar, a paramilitary group formed to crush the freedom struggle in the 1940s, on which a right-wing propaganda film was made.
Also in April 2024, she was caught on camera purportedly shooting an imaginary arrow at a mosque in Hyderabad during a Hindu festival. A case was registered against her for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.
She has also suggested that minor girls being sexually assaulted is a result of using mobile phones and the way they dress and behave asking “Whose fault is it if you walk on the street barefoot and a thorn pricks you? Yours or the government’s?” As a Brahmin woman herself, she has also upheld Brahminism in some of her interviews, stating “If you want to destroy Hindu dharma, you need to get hold of Brahmins. Unless they pollute the most vegetarian person closest to god, they can’t make a big impact.”
She has also said that people who convert to Christianity do so only because “they get paid very well” and that tribal communities perform animal sacrifices out of “ignorance” insisting that they will not go back there if they are “educated” about Hindutva and peace.
In a video from May 2024, Latha is seen intimidating and harassing Muslim women voters by personally ‘verifying’ them and asking them to remove their veils and reveal their faces at the Azampura polling station. She also approached an officer overseeing the polling claiming that the woman’s identity did not match and when the official assured her that she would look into it, Latha replied, “You are from the government. You cannot be trusted.” Latha was booked for undue influence at elections, obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions and intent to incite any class or community to commit crime against any other class or community.
Latha and other Hindutva leaders were also banned from entering Bidar, Karnataka for a few days in December 2024, following an order from District Collector Girish Badole, citing law and order concerns. Badole described these individuals as “habitual offenders” known for making communal speeches that could potentially disturb peace in the area. The organizers accused Badole of deliberately attempting to “suppress Hindu voices.”
In her social media posts, she has supported “bulldozer justice,” a form of punitive and unlawful deliverance of justice involving demolishing property of the accused without due process as well as alleged vote theft by the Congress party, a baseless claim.
