Raghuraj Singh, a senior BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh and chairman of the state’s high-power advisory committee under the labour and employment ministry, holds a position equivalent to a junior minister. Known for his hardline Hindutva stance, Singh has repeatedly made deeply inflammatory and dehumanising remarks targeting Muslims.
On March 14, 2025, ahead of the festival of Holi, Singh declared that Muslim men should wear hijabs made of tarpaulin while heading for Friday prayers, mocking religious practices and effectively suggesting they shield themselves from Hindu festival colours instead of seeking any protection from authorities.
With an openly contemptuous tone, Singh dismissed the possibility of any compromise near mosques, saying Holi comes once a year, unlike namaz, which happens every Friday.
He claimed Hindus should not be inconvenienced and ridiculed Muslim attire and religious precautions, saying that men, like women and mosques, could “cover up” in plastic. His remarks were not only bigoted but also clearly aimed at reinforcing Hindu dominance in public spaces, especially during festivals.
