Sanjeev Newar is a prominent figure in the Hindutva ecosystem, known for his anti-Muslim hatred. He is the founder of the publication Agniveer and he is also behind the right-wing Twitter account Gems of Bollywood. He has a significant following on Twitter, with over 160k followers, including influential figures like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Newar has long been associated with Hindutva ideologues and has contributed several articles to platforms like Swarajya. He is also linked to Swati Goel Sharma, with whom he co-founded Sewa Nyaya Utthan, a so-called welfare initiative.
In May 2021, Newar made headlines for his inflammatory statements at an event hosted by Sharma. He openly called for the assault and even murder of individuals who joke about cows or cow urine (gaumutra), calling such humor a “sign of terrorism.” His remarks were provocative and included the suggestion that the government should permit violence against those making such jokes in self-defense, even if the assailant kills the victim. Newar further justified his stance by linking a cow urine joke to the 2019 Pulwama terrorist attack. After public backlash, Newar attempted to downplay his comments, claiming they were taken out of context, but his defense was weak, and his position remained clear: he advocated violence in the name of cow protection.
Newar’s influence also extends to spreading communal narratives. In 2024, he amplified the baseless claim that a Muslim man named Ashraf was responsible for the murder of a Hindu woman, Mahalakshmi, in Bengaluru. The incident quickly turned into a communal flashpoint, with Newar and other right-wing influencers spreading the unfounded story that the murder was part of a ‘Love Jihad’ scheme, despite no evidence supporting such a claim. This rhetoric was part of a broader campaign to stoke communal tensions, with Newar using his platform to perpetuate divisive and harmful narratives.
In 2023, Newar shared a video of Pirzada Taha Siddiqui, a cleric from Furfura Sharif in West Bengal, urging Muslims to prepare their children for a competitive educational future rather than advocating for violence. The video, which went viral in 2023, shows Siddiqui saying, “Muslims, wake up! Teach your children how to fight. Be ready. Be prepared. Fathers and mothers, prepare your children. We have to fight against the Hindus…” While this segment was widely circulated, a closer look at the full speech reveals that Siddiqui was not calling for physical confrontation but rather emphasizing the importance of educational competition between communities.
He stressed that the fight would be over education, not violence, and that one day, Hindus and Muslims would progress together through education in Bengal, eventually competing with other states.
