Prashant Patel Umrao is a Hindu supremacist, fake news peddler, and BJP spokesperson. Despite being a Supreme Court advocate, he relentlessly pushes the party’s Islamophobic agenda through propaganda.
In March 2023, the Tamil Nadu Police filed a case against him for spreading false claims about attacks on Bihari migrant workers in the state. The Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail, rebuked him for inciting communal hatred, and mandated an affidavit pledging not to share hate-inducing content.
In March 2024, he again spread fake news with a communal spin, falsely claiming that the accused in the rape of a Spanish woman in Jharkhand were Christian converts working for missionaries. This communal spin was amplified by BJP leaders and debunked by police and was part of a larger effort to incite religious hatred and malign minorities.
In July 2018, Prashant Patel Umrao spread a blatant lie, claiming that Muslims had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against Hindu rituals like ‘Mata ki Chowki’ in public spaces. His tweet, designed to incite communal tension, ended with the provocative question: “Should Hindus allow Namaz and Muharram on roads?” In reality, the petition was filed by a Hindu organization in favor of the ritual after being denied permission by the NGT.
Umrao’s pattern of spreading lies continued with his involvement in the Kathua rape case. On April 20, 2018, he echoed the false narrative propagated by right-wing media outlets, claiming that the 8-year-old girl was not raped and was murdered elsewhere before her body was thrown in Rasana Village. His tweet ignored the post-mortem report, which clearly showed injuries to the victim’s sexual regions, confirming sexual assault.
Umrao’s history of hate and misinformation dates back to 2012. On July 28, he falsely attributed a quote to senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, claiming that Sardesai had called for the killing of a thousand Hindus. After widespread backlash, Umrao later deleted the tweet. In retaliation to a police complaint filed by Sardesai, Umrao launched a personal attack, accusing Sardesai of securing his son’s admission to Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University, through an illegal NRI quota and paying Rs 1 crore.
However, Sardesai disproved these claims by sharing the official admission order, which showed his son’s rank as 1,050 and confirmed that the admission was in the general category, not NRI.
In June 2018, Umrao, in an attempt to spread communal hate, falsely claimed that a Hindu student was barred from sitting for the entrance exam at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) because he was wearing a ‘kalawa’ or sacred thread. Umrao’s fake news had over 3,000 retweets. However, upon investigation, Alt News found that the student’s denial from the exam was not due to his religion, as Umrao claimed, but because he failed to meet the mandatory eligibility criterion of securing 55% in his LLB. Alt News also accessed the student’s application form, which confirmed that his academic performance did not meet the university’s requirements.
In October 2017, following the assault on a Swiss couple in Fatehpur Sikri, UP, Umrao falsely claimed that members of the minority community were responsible for the attack. Despite the international attention the incident received, his false claim was quickly debunked. Investigations revealed that the attackers were not from the minority community, contrary to Umrao’s claims.
In August 2017, after the Utkal Express derailment in Muzaffarnagar, UP, Prashant Patel Umrao spread baseless claims, falsely alleging that it was a terrorist plot to target Hindu pilgrims. He fabricated stories about railroad clips being removed to support his conspiracy theory. In reality, there was no terrorism involved. Reports confirmed human error as the cause of the derailment, exposing Umrao’s lies.
